Petition to the Government

I have the honor to be,

Your most obedient servant,

Acting Colonial Secretary.

The Honorable

John le Whyte Esq.,

Acting Chief Police Magistrate.

We, feeling aggrieved and aspersed, and our characters injured by the accusations brought against us by Mr. Mitchell, the Postmaster General, on 21 September last, note that no evidence was adduced to support the conviction against us. He availed of the privilege of appeal in the first instance, to His Excellency the Acting Governor, where, by new instructions, Mr. Mitchell deponed and prosecuted.

Therefore, being now advised by the Government that our right of appeal lies with the Supreme Court, we respectfully request that you be pleased to give instructions to furnish us with a Certified Copy of the Minutes of proceedings against us, at the Magistracy, on the 20th ult.; in order that we may carry our appeal either to the Supreme Court or convey the same.
